Katie Benn - Philly Joe Jones / Blues For Dracula

Bobby asked a diverse group of artists to recreate their favorite albums and/or album covers in their own style, and I chose this 1958 debut album by American jazz drummer, Philly Joe Jones. It was actually recorded on September 17th, 1958 so that makes it exactly 66 years old today!

The first track is a ridiculous impersonation of Bela Lugosi and the four tracks that follow are some decent jazz, obviously percussion heavy, which I enjoy.

Over the years, Jones was known to play alongside Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, among many other legends. He was even the house drummer for the storied Cafè Society in New York City in the late 1940s.

But beyond the music and the history, I just really appreciate how totally goofy the album cover is. Anything a little spooky and a little goofy gets an A+ from me.
